MEPVAULT 2026 MEP Design Best Practices Summary: 70 Articles, 16 Calculators, One Design Mindset

This is article 70 of the MEPVAULT 2026 MEP knowledge series. The platform now houses 70 in-depth articles, 16 interactive calculators (8 already built + 8 in pipeline), and growing research library. This summary captures the unifying design mindset across all of it.

The MEPVAULT design philosophy

Six principles emerge across all 70 articles:

Principle 1: Codes are the floor, not the ceiling

NBC 2016 + ECBC 2017 + ASHRAE/NFPA define minimum compliance. Real engineering exceeds these by 15-30% to capture credit, future-proof against revisions, and absorb site reality.

Principle 2: Free-cooling first

Every chiller plant should consider waterside + airside economiser before sizing the chiller. Indian climates allow 1,000-4,500 hours/year of free cooling. Energy savings 20-50% per year.

Principle 3: DOAS architecture is the new VAV

For commercial > 5,000 m², DOAS with parallel sensible cooling is the modern default. ERV + DCV + DOAS achieves 30-40% reduction vs all-air VAV.

Principle 4: Calculators with hidden logic

For tools published openly, the calculation methodology stays server-side (PHP), front-end shows only inputs + results. This protects intellectual property + ensures methodology consistency.

Principle 5: Multi-layer commissioning

Construction verification → functional testing → performance validation → bacterial validation (for hospitals). Each layer is non-negotiable.

Principle 6: Pillar + spoke article topology

Cornerstone pillars (NBC Master Guide, ASHRAE 62.1 Implementation, Net-Zero MEP, 2026 Design Checklist) anchor the platform. Spoke articles cross-link to pillars + each other.

The 8 calculators currently built (front-end + back-end split)

All calculators in the MEPVAULT Calc Engine plugin v1.8.0 follow strict architecture: PHP back-end (formulas, tables, design factors all hidden) + JS front-end (form, fetch, render).

1. Lighting Load Calculator — NBC 2016 + IS 3646 + IES + ECBC. CU-RCR sensitivity + LPD compliance.

2. Cable Sizing Calculator — IS 1554 + IS 3961 + IS 7098 derating chain. Voltage drop + waterfall.

3. Plumbing DFU & Pipe Sizer — NBC 2016 + IPC 2018 fixture-unit method. By-fixture breakdown + size sensitivity.

4. Plumbing Demand by Building Type — CPHEEO consumption + diurnal profile + storage + pumps.

5. Firefighting Pipe Sizer — NFPA 13 + IS 15105 density-area + Hazen-Williams iteration.

6. Firefighting Pump Head Calculator — NFPA 20 + IS 12469 TDH calc + 65-100-150 verification.

7. NBC Emergency Ventilation Calculator — Stair pressurization + lobby + basement (volumetric/HRR-based).

8. DG Room Ventilation Calculator — IS 4720 + manufacturer specs + heat balance.

8 more calculators in pipeline (Transformer Vent, ASHRAE VRP, NBC Fire Selector refactor, Duct Sizer refactor, CHW Pipe Sizer refactor, CW Pipe Sizer refactor, U Value refactor, Staircase Pressurization refactor).
