Indian Phase-Change Material (PCM) for Building + TES — ASTM C1850 + EN 16235 + IEA SHC Task 42 + ASHRAE

Indian PCM building envelope + TES — paraffin + salt-hydrate + bio-based PCM at ₹1500-12000/m² + saves 12-50 % peak HVAC load shifted. ASTM C1850 + EN 16235 + IEA SHC Task 42 + RAL-GZ 896 + ASHRAE Handbook Ch 17 govern. India 2030 market potential ₹1485 Cr. Three failures: wrong melting-point (22-24°C never freezes in Indian summer), PCM encapsulation 8-12 % yearly degradation in plastic, PCM + active HVAC not coordinated via BMS for night-flush.

Indian phase-change material (PCM) framework

India PCM (Phase-Change Material) — paraffin + salt-hydrate + bio-based PCM embedded in building envelope. Absorbs heat during phase transition (solid ↔ liquid) at design temperature. Players — Rubitherm + PCM Energy + Microtek Encapsulation + IISc Bangalore R&D. Standards stack — ASTM C1850 (PCM enthalpy) + EN 16235 (PCM thermal-comfort) + IEA SHC Task 42 + RAL-GZ 896 + ASHRAE Handbook 2024 Ch 17 + WBCSD Bioeconomy + India IIT Bombay PCM Programme.

Three Indian PCM MEP failures

  1. Wrong melting-point for Indian climate — Indian summer indoor 28-32°C; PCM melting at 22-24°C never freezes back at night → permanent liquid → no cycling. Specify PCM at 28-30°C for Indian context per IEA SHC Task 42.
  2. PCM encapsulation degradation — paraffin PCM in plastic capsule degrades 8-12 % per year. Specify metallic or ceramic encapsulation + 25-yr-rated per RAL-GZ 896.
  3. PCM + active HVAC coordination missing — PCM passive + active HVAC must coordinate. Without smart control PCM holds heat too long. Specify BMS control + night-cooling night-flush per ASHRAE Handbook Ch 17.
