Indian MBT tank assembly workshop MEP for 150 tanks/yr demands ₹1260 Cr capex with hull welding + heavy crane + Class 1 Div 1 paint booth + engine + turret + avionics ISO 7 + ballistic range + NBC protection test. DRDO + CVRDE + DGQA + EME + STANAG + NFPA 33 + ACGIH govern. India produces 12 T-72 + 40 T-90 + 8 Arjun Mk1A + 35 K-9 Vajra + 55 BMP-2 + 15 Light Tank Zorawar (planned) per year. Three failures: hull welding fume + ozone ventilation inadequate, paint booth Class 1 Div 1 + LEL not enforced for CARC, ballistic range under-engineered.

Indian tank + AFV assembly framework

Indian armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) — T-90 Bhishma + T-72 Ajeya + Arjun MBT + BMP-2 Sarath + K-9 Vajra-T (artillery) + Light tanks. Manufactured at HVF (Heavy Vehicles Factory) Avadi + EFA (Engine Factory) Avadi + AVANI + private (Mahindra Defence + Tata Advanced Systems + L&T Defence). Standards stack — DRDO ARDE + CVRDE + Mahindra/Tata standards + IS standards + DGQA + Indian Army EME + worldreknown Stanag + NATO 4569 + MIL-STD-810/461.

Three Indian tank workshop MEP failures

  1. Hull welding ventilation inadequate — 40-60 t MBT hull welding produces fume + ozone. ACGIH TLV requires < 5 mg/m³ welding-fume + < 0.1 ppm ozone. Indian sites often inadequate local exhaust + face worker exposure.
  2. Paint booth Class 1 Div 1 + LEL not enforced — military paint includes CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) with toluene + xylene. Class 1 Div 1 + 25 % LEL alarm mandatory per NFPA 33. Indian sites sometimes spec Div 2 — fire risk + DGQA audit fail.
  3. Outdoor ballistic test range under-engineered — 105/120/125 mm tank gun produces 8000-12000 m/s muzzle velocity. Range needs proper backstop + safety zones. Indian sites sometimes share with infantry range — schedule conflict + safety.
