Three Indian paper mill recovery boiler failures

  1. Black liquor concentration < 70 % to recovery boiler — low-concentration liquor (60-65 %) needs supplementary fuel + reduces steam + power generation. Specify concentrator to 75-85 % min. Indian legacy mills feed at 65 % = 15-20 % efficiency loss + ₹35-55 Cr/yr saving foregone.
  2. TRS (total reduced sulphur) > 5 mg/Nm³ — TRS emissions cause rotten-egg odour + community complaint. CPCB 2022 caps at 5 mg/Nm³. Indian mills routinely emit 12-25 mg/Nm³. Specify NCG (non-condensible gas) collection + thermal oxidation.
  3. AOX in ETP effluent > 1 kg/t pulp — chlorine bleaching produces AOX (adsorbable organic halides). CPCB + worldwide phasing out elemental chlorine to ECF (elemental chlorine-free) + TCF (totally chlorine-free). Indian mills still using elemental chlorine cannot meet AOX norm.
