A 6000 m² closed-stack research library needs ₹8.5 Cr HVAC capex with MERV 16 + carbon scrubber AMC filtration at SO2 < 1 ppb, RH 45 ± 5 %, PM2.5 < 10 µg/m³, and 24×7 continuous operation per ISO 11799 + PD 5454. Indian urban ambient at 30-60 µg/m³ SO2 accelerates paper acidification 7-18x without AMC control. Three Indian library failures: AMC carbon scrubber omitted (only MERV 13 specd), closed stack HVAC off overnight allowing 75-90 % RH monsoon mould bloom, reading hall + stack on shared AHU transferring moisture + CO2 + dust load.

Library + research archive air quality framework

National + research libraries (National Library Kolkata, Connemara Library Chennai, IIT/IISc libraries, Sahitya Akademi archives) hold paper + parchment + microfilm + magnetic media — each with different deterioration kinetics. ASHRAE Handbook 2023 Ch 24 + IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) Library Building Guidelines 2024 + ISO 11799:2015 + PD 5454:2012 + AIC Climate Guidelines together define environmental control. The dominant degradation drivers are RH excursion (paper expansion-contraction), AMC (gaseous pollutants — SO2, NO2, O3, formaldehyde), PM2.5 + PM10 (dust + soot accumulation), and biological growth (mould at > 65 % RH).

Three Indian library + archive air-quality failures

  1. AMC carbon scrubber omitted — typical Indian library uses MERV 13 only. SO2 from Tier-1 city ambient air (annual avg 30-60 µg/m³) penetrates + accelerates paper acidification + ink fading. ISO 11799 + PD 5454 require carbon-based AMC filtration for SO2/NO2/O3 < 5 ppb. Add ₹65 lakh/AHU but doubles paper life expectancy.
  2. Closed stack RH excursion during off-hours — many Indian libraries shut HVAC overnight. Stack room RH spikes 75-90 % in monsoon = mould bloom on covers + spines within 5-7 nights. Run continuous 24×7 even at unoccupied setback (24°C / 55 % RH) — energy cost is 1.4x but recovery cost of mould remediation is ₹15-25 lakh/event.
  3. Reading hall + stack on same AHU — readers introduce moisture + CO2 + dust. Stack rooms must be on separate AHU with no return-air mixing. Indian designs routinely share AHU + transfer reading-hall load to closed stack — fails ISO 11799.
